Troubleshooting Poor Contact in Wire Harness Terminals

The root cause of poor contact often lies in changes to the physical condition of the terminal contact surface, with oxidation of the terminal contact surface being the most common issue. Metal surfaces—especially copper terminals—are highly prone to forming an oxide layer in humid or corrosive environments. This significantly increases contact resistance and obstructs the normal transmission of current or signals.

During maintenance, the power supply should first be disconnected. Then, use specialized tools such as precision electronic contact cleaner to spray and wipe the contact surface, thoroughly removing oxides and contaminants. For terminals with complex structures, a magnifying glass may be used to carefully inspect the cleaning results.

After cleaning, ensure that the contact surface is completely dry before reconnection. If the terminal has undergone physical deformation or lost its elasticity due to repeated insertion/removal or severe oxidation, cleaning alone may not be sufficient. In such cases, replacing the terminal is recommended. Selecting materials with strong corrosion resistance or applying appropriate surface plating treatment can further enhance the long-term reliability of the electrical connection.
