Mitigation Strategies for Insertion and Withdrawal Force Degradation in Board-to-Board Connectors

Insertion and withdrawal force degradation is a key factor affecting the long-term reliability of connectors. It is mainly caused by contact wear, plastic creep, or stress relaxation. To effectively suppress this degradation, a multi-dimensional approach is required. The primary measure is to optimize the design and material selection of the contact springs to enhance their resistance to permanent deformation. Secondly, precise control of the mating structure between terminals and the plastic housing is critical. Structural simulation and experimental validation should be employed to ensure uniform stress distribution during repeated mating cycles, thereby reducing localized excessive wear.

Industry experts recommend that for precision applications such as miniature BTB connectors, insertion and withdrawal force curves should be monitored on a regular basis. Abnormal fluctuations in these curves often serve as early indicators of contact failure or accelerated wear.

In addition, maintaining stable plating performance is one of the core countermeasures. Selecting plating materials with superior wear resistance (such as hard gold instead of soft gold), and ensuring that plating thickness and uniformity meet stringent operating requirements, can significantly slow the increase in contact resistance. At the same time, optimizing the connector’s guiding and alignment structure to reduce misalignment stress during mating is also an effective means of minimizing abnormal wear and maintaining stable insertion and withdrawal forces.
